Increasing parts of electricity come from renewable energy sources. Wind power and solar power are driving forces here. Electric vehicles are increasingly revolutionizing individual mobility. Both sectors have seen enormous growth rates worldwide in recent years. However, the availability of the strategic metals required here is limited.

The solar cell has found its way into almost all areas of life. Most solar cells are still made of silicon. In recent years, however, so-called thin-film solar cells made of gallium arsenide or cadmium tellurium have made enormous progress and should soon enter the mass market.
Thin-film solar cells have many advantages: The energy yield is good even in cloudy skies. The carrier materials are also more flexible. The solar panels can therefore be glued directly to motorhomes or boats. The expansion of photovoltaics is expected to increase by 80 percent by 2023. Owners of gallium or tellurium can therefore expect an increasing demand for their property value.
Supermagnets for Environmental Protection
Many environmentally friendly technologies are based on the use of extremely strong permanent magnets. These are used in wind turbines, e-bikes or electric vehicles, but are also used for headphones, loudspeakers and medical technology (e.g. in MRI). The most powerful permanent magnets consist of neodymium, iron and boron (NdFeB).
These supermagnets are the first choice for the foreseeable future to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy and vice versa. By adding dysprosium, praseodymium or terbium, their magnetic field also remains stable up to temperatures of 200 °C (392 °F). Their strength means that NdFeB magnets can be installed in a resource-saving and space-saving manner.
Wind turbines have been shaping the landscapes for several decades, especially in the north of Germany. They are a basic foundation of a greener energy supply. Wind energy is not a growing market at the moment. However, there is a constant need, which could increase again as a result of the rethinking of the climate. Several hundred kilograms of neodymium are required to produce a permanent magnet for use in a wind turbine.
Strong magnets with small volumes are of great relevance for advanced mobility: e-bikes and electric cars are becoming increasingly popular. Nearly one million e-bikes were purchased in 2018. The selection of models for electric cars is constantly increasing. Environmental protection and fast cars are not incompatible sizes: Porsche will launch its first electric model in 2020.
The space for market growth in electric mobility is enormous: only 0.26 of all German cars are powered by electricity and double-digit growth figures are forecast for the German e-bike industry. Owners of neodymium and dysprosium can expect increasing interest in their assets.
